Epstein, Sir Jacob
(10 nov. 1880, Nueva York, N.Y., EE.UU.–21 ago. 1959, Londres, Inglaterra).

Escultor británico nacido en EE.UU. Estudió en París y se estableció en Inglaterra en 1905. Sus 18 figuras desnudas, conocidas como Estatuas Strand (1907–08), hicieron que fuera acusado de indecencia; su ángel desnudo en la tumba de Oscar Wilde (1912) en París también fue atacado. En 1913 adhirió al vorticismo y desarrolló un estilo caracterizado por formas simples y superficies llanas talladas en piedra. Sus obras a menudo conservaban parte de la forma del bloque original que a veces modelaba en yeso. Es sobre todo conocido por las figuras religiosas y alegóricas talladas en enormes bloques de piedra y por bustos en bronce de celebridades. En ocasiones esculpió grupos monumentales en bronce, como San Miguel y el demonio (1958) para la catedral de Coventry.
